Bio
I’m a writer, director, producer and a musician. What can I say, I'm enamored with creative expression in its myriad forms. But the professional skills only tell you “what I do.” I believe it's equally important to nurture a set of values and qualities that continue to shape “who I am” as a human being. You won't find the following content in my resume. My inner pursuits were born out of my love for all people. I'm also a husband, father, brother and friend. And I hope I'm growing in all these areas. Most creative projects are long term; making team dynamics and who you hire extremely important. If you have time, please take a few moments to read my short bio. Maybe I can add value to one of your projects. So, how did I get to this happy place?
THE STEEL CITY KID
I was born in Kokomo, Indiana and raised in Gary; the home of Michael Jackson, Deniece Williams, astronaut Frank Borman, and me. For as long as I can remember, I've loved writing, music, and all things creative. In those early days, I always imagined myself with a microphone in my hand, singing in a band. There had to be a creative life for me somewhere other than Gary. My little steel town was already beginning to show the signs of decay that would one day turn it into the full-blown ghost town it is today. Back then, you needed a heavy launch vehicle to escape its gravitational pull. I was doing great in school, but I’m not sure who I would’ve become if I hadn’t been fortunate enough to win that academic scholarship to a private prep school “out east."
THE MASSACHUSETTS PREPPIE
That's right. When my principal called on a hot summer day to ask me if I'd like to go to school out east in September, all I heard was "out east." And all I said was "Absolutely!" My mom informed me later that day that “out east” meant New England. I was 14 years old and I was scared. I knew I was going to miss family and friends. But I was also excited. This was the opportunity I knew would come; and I wasn't going to let fear rob me of it. So, that September, I traded the fading hopes and mean streets of Gary for the rolling hills and fresh promise of western Massachusetts. It was life-changing. After four years at Wilbraham & Monson Academy, I was remade, prepped, and exhausted from housing all that teen angst and privilege. But my newly-won scholarship to Northeastern University sprinkled ample gratitude on my cynicism stew. On to Beantown!
For a sheltered private school student, Boston was a kaleidoscope of “big city” distractions. And did I ever get distracted. I'd never seen a school as big as Northeastern. And it was right in the middle of the city. Trolley tracks ran through my campus! I could walk to the Museum of Fine Arts. And there were parties every weekend. But I was about to discover that Boston was an academic cosmos filled with other colleges, universities, students, and parties. I explored an extracurricular "city life." I got caught up in Boston's vibrant music scene. And somewhere during my first year, music finally absconded with my full attention. And to the dismay of every adult who'd proudly tracked my academic progress, I put my studies on hold to become a full-time musician. Yeah...I dropped out.
THE TOURING MUSICIAN/ACTOR
I was young, free, and broke. But there I was with a microphone in my hand, singing in a band. I was grateful. I quickly learned how to keep a roof over my head and pizza in my pie hole. Soon, the creative ends began to meet and I realized my dreams of being a lead singer/songwriter in search of the hallowed record deal. I fronted numerous bands, from rock to jazz, and toured much of the world. I experienced the London music scene for a few years (and nearly became a pop star) before heading back to Boston to try my hand at music producing. I founded Bright Tomorrow Productions back then as a music publishing company. One day, my voice teacher suggested that I try acting. So, I thought, “How hard could it be?” Plenty. But, somehow, I was fortunate enough to appear in numerous print ads, theatrical productions, corporate films, TV commercials and movies. Then, I moved to Minneapolis and did more singing and even more acting. One day, I got the crazy idea that I wanted to be a director. “Hey, how hard could it be?”
THE ROVING VIDEO PRODUCER/DIRECTOR
I used my industry experience to work my way up to producer/director at BI Worldwide, a prestigious full-service employee engagement and performance improvement company. Directing isn’t that easy either, but it sure is fun. Now, I live in LA. And thanks to my BI mentors, I've produced and directed over 100 corporate media projects for some of the largest companies in the world. I’ve worked with top execs, celebs & actors while producing and directing well over 24 hours of finished content; the functional equivalent of 12 full-length documentary films! To get that done, I’ve hired award-winning creatives, production crews, and post-production wizards. I’ve traveled north, south, east and west to over 81 different cities in 23 states. I've also written and produced award-winning on-air promos. And throughout the journey, I’ve found time to keep honing my creative writing skills.
THE SEDENTARY WRITER & PROMO PRODUCER
I love writing. It allows me to stay put and complete projects in my pajamas. Not that I would, mind you...but I could if the mood overwhelmed me. I’ve written corporate video scripts, short stories, two musicals, a sitcom pilot, a spec script or two, an entire customer service course, numerous film and television treatments, and The Unfit; an action thriller that garnered a Recommend rating from Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Of course, I'd love to see some of this content produced. After all, I'm in Hollywood. Till then...the creative life goes on...
THE HUMAN BEING
We’re all on different journeys and paths. Mine continue to take me to a lot of fun and wonderful places; the stuff of dreams you could say. I love my creative life. And no matter what I’ve experienced or where I’ve been, I’ve found that I’m happiest when I’m working with talented, positive people, performing at my highest levels and always trying to improve; both professionally and personally. Because when we strive to be good, kind and nurturing while we do what we do, it makes work and life that much more enjoyable for everybody. Hope we get to work together some day. Thanks for reading. Peace.
